After a Test Result: Six Questions That Clarify the Next Step

A report may contain unfamiliar words or findings that sound more definite than they are. The clinician who ordered or reviewed the test can explain how the result fits with your symptoms, examination, and medical history.

Six useful questions

  1. What does this result mean in plain language?
  2. Is the finding likely related to the problem we are evaluating?
  3. What does the test not tell us?
  4. Do we need earlier records or another type of information?
  5. Does this change the current plan?
  6. When and how will the next step be reviewed?

Bring the full report when possible, not only a screenshot of one sentence. If imaging was performed elsewhere, ask how to provide the report and images.

Avoid interpreting one line by itself

Online explanations cannot account for your complete medical situation. Do not start, stop, or change treatment based only on a report phrase. AHRQ advises patients to discuss the meaning of results with their doctor and ask questions before making treatment decisions. Review AHRQ’s guidance.
