When More Than One Clinician Is Involved in Your Pain Care

A pain-management visit may take place alongside appointments with a primary-care clinician or another specialist. Rather than assuming everyone has the same information, use the visit to clarify what has been shared and who is responsible for each next step.

Identify the people involved

Bring the names of clinicians currently involved in the concern and, when available, their office contact information. Note the reason you see each one. This is an organizational aid, not a request to choose between clinicians or change existing care relationships.

Flag changes since the last conversation

If another clinician has given you new instructions, arranged a test, or changed a medicine, tell the team. Bring the actual instructions or report when available so you do not have to reconstruct them from memory. MedlinePlus recommends notifying your provider when another provider gives you a new prescription.

Ask who will handle the next action

For each agreed step, ask which office should arrange it, who will discuss results, and whom to call with questions. For example: Should I contact the office that ordered the test for the result, and what copy would you like for this visit? Ask whether permission or a records request is needed to exchange information.

Resolve conflicting information directly

If two sets of instructions appear different, explain the discrepancy and ask the relevant clinicians or pharmacist to clarify. Do not combine instructions into a new plan of your own. Keep one current set of notes that distinguishes confirmed instructions from questions still awaiting an answer.

For a Tucson inquiry, review Med Clinics pain-management information or request an appointment. Ask the office how to send records securely; do not put private records in a public form or comment.
