Imaging can be an important part of some pain evaluations, but an MRI, CT scan, or X-ray is only one piece of the clinical picture. Your symptoms, examination, history, and prior treatment can matter just as much.
Questions you may want to ask
- Is my existing imaging recent enough to be useful?
- Should I bring the report, the images, or both?
- Does the imaging finding match the symptoms I am describing?
- Would additional imaging change the next step?
- Are there records from another clinician that would be helpful?
Do not assume that every abnormal imaging finding is the cause of pain, and do not delay urgent care when symptoms are severe or rapidly changing.
